Surf Trials & Rankings
In 2023, after a new board was elected, it was decided to hold 2 surf trials that would establish a new set of rankings for our local surfers. The trials were held in a slightly different format than our usual elimination heat format. Every competitor was able to surf two heats, regardless of their score/placement in the first heat surfed. The purpose for this was to allow all interested competitors as much surf time as possible, to get some points and rankings on the board. The first trial was held at Boat Basin on December 16, 2023. The second trial was held at Ricks Reef on January 14, 2024. Here are the results from those two trials:


SURF TRIALS 1- BOAT BASIN DECEMBER 2023
One of two open surf trials held for the purpose of gaining as much participation as possible, to establish initial points and rankings amongst local surfers and bodyboarders, and to serve as one factor of consideration toward national team selection for ISA Olympic Qualifying competitions abroad. This trial was held at the Hagatna Boat Basin. There were a total of 27 registered competitors, 6 of whom were bodyboarders. The top 10 in the men’s open surfing division were (from 1st-10th): Jared Gogue, Cheyne Purcell, and Shane Pier, Napu Taimanglo, Tom Wooley, Hayden Murphy, Kenny Alexander, Peter Santiago, Cason Jackson, and Matt Robles. There were 5 female competitors (from 1st-5th): Sarah Wilkinson, Riley Purcell, Heejung, Hazel Wilson, and Maeva Conroy. There were 6 bodyboard competitors (from 1st to 6th): John Barber, Johnathan Leon Guererro, Juan King, Quinn Sablan, Derek Quenga, and Jermaine Guerrero.

SURF TRIALS 2- RICKS REEF JANUARY 2023
One of two open surf trials held for the purpose of gaining as much participation as possible, to establish initial points and rankings amongst local surfers and bodyboarders, and to serve as one factor of consideration toward national team selection for ISA Olympic Qualifying competitions abroad. This trial was held at Ricks Reef, hosted by the Royal Rihga Laguna Guam Resort. There were a total of 25 registered competitors, 6 of whom were bodyboarders. The top 10 in men’s open surfing were (from 1st to 10th): Jared Gogue, George Borges, Cheyne Purcell, Diego Vaz, Derrick Ikehara, Napu Taimanglo, Peter Santiago, Andrew K., Hayden Murphy, and Kiko Santos. Only one female competed, Sarah Wilkinson, finishing 11th overall. There were 6 bodyboarders (from 1st-6th): John Barber, Larron Gandaoli, Carl Dela Cruz, Johnathan Leon Guerrero, Quinn Sablan, and Abe Gandaoli.
